Living in the moment is an art. It requires practice, but is well worth the effort. If time is an illusion, as quantum theory suggests, all we truly have is the moment. The past is a memory, and the future is anticipation. When you focus on the present moment, you open to intuition, wisdom, and guidance. You can increase self-awareness, elevate your frequency, and create heart-brain coherence.
You can learn to examine your thoughts and choose the perspective you prefer. Then you cease to be at the mercy of thoughts that do not serve you. Mindfulness is a practice that helps you notice a
nd self-correct when your mind is cycling unpleasantly. You can switch your focus to what you are doing, feeling, smelling, seeing, and hearing in the moment.
When you become aware of a thought you want to change, simply tell yourself to “STOP”. Then replace the thought with something that benefits you. That is especially helpful to do when you are obsessing over something such as a past trauma. Command your mind to stop, let the thought go, and then replace it with a positive one. With practice, managing your thought processes becomes easier.
Free will allows you to choose a perspective. That is your power. For example, you can view a challenge as a victim or as a grand learning experience. When you choose to love yourself, you view all your experiences as having contributed to the amazing person you are.
Choosing your thoughts helps you create your life deliberately. Focus on what is going right in your life, what makes you feel strong, and how you are expanding. That helps you find solutions to problems and attract positive things into your life. And every time you succeed in quieting your mind and being in the moment, congratulate yourself and appreciate your success.
A powerful strategy to calm an overactive mind is meditation. Meditation helps you learn to focus on the moment. If you struggle to quiet your mind, you can listen to guided meditations, such as those available on YouTube. Another strategy is to go for a walk and focus on the placement of your feet, sounds you hear, what you see, smell, and feel in the moment.
THE QUICK COHERENCE EXERCISE
Quieting your mind will help you connect with and open your heart. That leads you to finding more joy and love. The HeartMath Institute devised a Quick Coherence technique to help you relax and connect to your heart. It is an easy exercise that puts you into a mindful state. The institute claims that if this exercise is practiced daily, you will gain long-lasting heart-brain coherence, reduce stress, and improve emotional balance.
Do this for three minutes every day:
Shift your awareness to your heart by placing your hands over it.
Breathe in for five seconds, then out for five seconds.
As you breathe, contemplate positive emotions like gratitude, compassion, care, and, or love.
The moment is what we have and where we live. Becoming attuned to it leads to heightened self-awareness as you learn to observe yourself and manage your reactions. Quieting the mind takes you away from anxiety and stress, and opens you to spiritual insights and deepened connections to all that is.
